Pécs, a city with a history of some 2000 years, lies at
foot of the Mecsek Hills. It is no accident that Pécs has
been called a Mediterranean city: it has an exceptionally mild
climate for a Hungarian city thanks to the hills that surround
it. Considering the pleasant climate and the attractive scenery
it is no wonder that both the Romans and the Turks stayed here
for long periods and they contributed some truly beautiful buildings
to the city. The fact that the ancient Christian cemetery of Sopianae
was selected as a World Heritage sights in 2000 was recognition
of these historic memories. The protected sight includes the Bishop’s
Palace, the Dome Square in front of the Cathedral, and Saint Stephen
Square with its immediate surroundings. But Pécs also has
several other important sights. If we set out on foot from Széchenyi
Square, it is an easy walk to go around visiting the most important
sights: the Jami, the Elephant House, the Saracen Pharmacy, the
Cathedral, and the museums: – Csontváry, Vasarely,
Zsolnay, Nemes Endre, Martyn, …. The hotels of the Danubius
chain are located in the direct vicinity of these sights in Pécs.
HOTEL PALATINUS***
Just a few steps away from the main square, this hotel is located
at the beginning of the famous Király Street. The hotel
was built in the early 20th century – in 1915 – in
secession style, and it was originally owned by the Hamerly family.
Its current façade is the result of a refurbishment project
carried out in 1988. Some of the rooms and suites are equipped
with air-conditioning, and all of them include a TV, minibar
and telephone. The hotel’s restaurant offers Hungarian
and international dishes, and a wide range of wines from the
famous Villány-Siklós wine district. And we have
not even mentioned the most beautiful part of the building: the
Bartók room which has a capacity of 300 people and it
was named after the famous Hungarian composer Béla Bartók
who once gave a concert in this stunningly ornate room. In addition
to the large-capacity Bartók room, a smaller function
room is available to guests: the recently refurbished Nádor
room. With the help of the wide selection of services provided
by its Business Center, the hotel can satisfy demands represented
by all types of conferences – ranging from basic technical
facilities to wireless internet access. And after work, well-deserved
relaxation is guaranteed in the Palatinus Wellness Studio where
all hotel guests can use the sauna for free. Additional services
that help relaxation include the steamroom, a solarium and massage.
HOTEL
PÁTRIA***
Hotel Pátria is the other Danubius hotel in Pécs,
and although it is much newer than Palatinus, it is still a mature
building. This hotel is also in the centre of town, and its exterior
and interior are in modern style, similarly to the furnishings.
Of the total 116 rooms and 1 suite available to guests, 83 rooms
and the suite have been fully refurbished. Thanks to this “beauty
treatment,” the room interiors look at least 20 years younger
than before, and to enhance comfort several rooms have been equipped
with air-conditioning.
The hotel’s restaurant and the adjoining summer terrace can
cater for as many as 200 people. In addition to Hungarian and international
specialities, fine wines tempt lovers of culinary delights.
The Hotel Patria includes one function room with a capacity of
80 people and two rooms with capacity of 25 rooms. The wide selection
of technical equipment available make all rooms perfect for presentations
and training sessions.
The difficulties of downtown parking will not disturb guests of
Danubius hotels because next to the Hotel Pátria there are
plenty of car parking and bus parking spaces for guests of both
hotels. In addition to the rich selection of events offered by
the city, a trip to Pécs cannot be complete without discovering
the surrounding areas. The footpaths of wooded parks in the Mecsek
Hills, the Lakes of Orfű, the wine cellars of Villány,
and many other sights make this corner of southern Hungary tempting
and unforgettable.
